Which Types of Robin Williams Movies Do You Prefer?

When you take a look at all of the Robin Williams movies out there, you will really find two very different extremes: the wacky, manic comedic Robin Williams, and the very serious, tugging-on-your-heart-strings Robin Williams. I think he has done both kinds well, and both kinds horribly. I’m going to highlight the good ones of each here.

The Birdcage I just watched this flick again for the first time since it came out (about 15 years!). The Robin Williams movies that shoot for tickling the funny bone sometimes go over the top. This one crosses that line, but doesn’t seem to cross it TOO much. While Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria really bring the flamboyant funny to the flick, Robin Williams should be credited for offering a more subtle (but no less effective) humor.

I think everyone was a little surprised when Robin Williams started performing in more serious roles. The first one I remember was Dead Poets Society, which truly did impress me. However, I was more blown away by the part for which he won an Academy Award, which I believe was well deserved.

Good Will Hunting (Miramax Collector’s Series) Good Will Hunting is best known for bringing us the fresh talents of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In addition to acting in this fine film, they also won an Academy Award for writing the script for this clever film. Fortunately, the acting of Robin Williams was not overlooked after this movie’s release. He rightfully won an Oscar for his role as Matt Damon’s therapist/friend. In this film he finds the perfect balance of humor and sensitivity, which made it that much more effective.

Because of the acclaim he received for his various acting achievements, I wanted to revisit his early work – standup.

Robin Williams – Live at the Met [VHS] Robin Williams movies are successful largely because of his history on the stage. The man displays an amazing amount of energy. His manic humor sets the stage for what will later become a very successful film career.

The bottom line is that you can find almost every manner of film in the array of Robin Williams movies that are available. For every Good Morning Vietnam, you will also find a Patch Adams. Tread carefully.
